About this poll

A Short History of the Internet in Türkiye

Türkiye's first internet connection came on 12 April 1993, when METU linked to the US NSFNet over a 64 Kbps line. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, local sites such as Ekşi Sözlük, sahibinden.com and GittiGidiyor were founded. Internet use rose from about 11 percent of the population in 2002 to 45 percent in 2012.

Messengers and New Social Sites

From the mid-2000s to the early 2010s, daily habits were shaped by messaging programs and new social sites. According to Microsoft executives in 2008, more than 20 million people in Türkiye used MSN. In October 2008, Belgium-based Netlog had close to 5 million users from Türkiye. FriendFeed had tens of thousands of users in the country and offered a Turkish interface; Skype software also bundled Turkish. On Vine, which launched in January 2013, accounts from Türkiye reached millions of followers.

How We Chose the List

The list includes services that were widely used in Türkiye and are now closed or no longer in service. Each service's founding year and closing date were checked against Wikipedia and press sources, and its use in Türkiye was backed by press reports, user numbers or Turkish-language service information. Services whose closing date could not be verified, popular services that are still open, people, and sites closed through legal proceedings were left out.

A Quick Look at the Services

MSN Messenger (1999-2013), Yahoo Messenger (1998-2018) and Skype (2003-2025) were used for instant messaging and calls. Netlog was a social network with profiles, photos and chat, and FriendFeed ran as a sharing feed from 2007 to 2015. Vine hosted 6-second videos from 2013 to 2017. GittiGidiyor served as an e-commerce site from 2001 to 2022, and Blogcu.com was a local blog service from 2005 to 2020. FarmVille was played on Facebook from 2009 until 31 December 2020.

How Voting Works

Each device can vote once in this poll. Results become visible after you cast your vote. If you remember a service that is not listed, you can suggest it through the poll suggestion form on the page; services whose closing date and use in Türkiye are verified will be considered in a later update.
